Dorothy Ruff

Dorothy Jean (Bailey) Ruff began her earthly journey on January 1, 1938 and returned home to be with the Lord on August 1, 2012. She was one of twelve children born to the late Ulus Sr. and Artrell Bailey of Somerville, Tennessee. Dorothy received her formal education in Somerville, graduating from Fayette Ware High School. She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, also in Somerville. In the late 1950’s, she relocated to Buffalo, New York where she joined fellowship with the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Her service at Antioch included singing in both the Senior Choir and the Dr. Watts Choir. On November 25, 1961, Dorothy became the lifelong wife of Mr. James H. Ruff, Sr. who was originally from Ninety Six, South Carolina. Together they were blessed with four children. In addition to being a loving wife, mother and homemaker, Dorothy worked outside the home for the Erie County Health Department, transitioning to the Department of Social Services where she worked as a Health Care Aide for Managed Care which was formerly known as the Child Teen Health Assurance Program (C/THAP). Her career there spanned 28 years from 1974 until her retirement in 2002. For many of those years, Dorothy was a Union Steward with AFSCME. After her retirement, Dorothy became an active member of the William-Emslie YMCA where she took exercise classes and served as Travel Coordinator for the seniors. She was also active in the Hamlin Park Community Taxpayers’ Association. In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by four of her siblings: Pastor Ulus Bailey, Jr. (the late Mary), Larry D. Bailey, her identical twin sister Vera Taylor (the late Bay), and Ruby N. (Bailey) Rivers (the late Richard). Dorothy’s memory is cherished by her devoted husband of 50 years, James H. Ruff, Sr.; her four children: Estella Witherspoon (Richard) of Pittsburg, PA, Gilda Ruff of Memphis, TN, James H. Ruff, Jr. of Buffalo, NY and Roslyn Ruff of Brooklyn, NY; two grandchildren: Richard Witherspoon, Jr. and Erica Witherspoon; one great grandchild, Olivia Witherspoon; three brothers: John L. Bailey (Vera) and Rufus Bailey, both of Memphis, TN and William Bailey (Patricia) of Beaumont, TX; four sisters: Ida Mae Worles (Charlie), Mary Harbin (the late J.T.), Jannie Echols and Anna Fitzgerald (the late Artie), all of Memphis, TN; brother and sister-in-law Samuel Ruff (Margaret) and Cleola Norman, both of Buffalo, NY; aunt Mary Alice Granberry of Buffalo, NY; uncle Eugene Yancey of Detroit, MI; special nephews Carl Bailey and Reginald Taylor of Buffalo, NY; very special friends Faye Martin, Raynette Murphy, Mary Jordan, Carol Jones, Lessie Huff, Norma Brooks, Janice Swaggert, Delores Moore, Mary Williams and Mary Hill, and many other beloved family members and dear close friends.
